Family Farm Fun

By rebecca, July 29, 2010 2:46 pm

Seven days a week from 10am – 5pm. Five minutes North of Milton (9528 Hwy 25 in Halton Hills).

It’s not just for apple picking anymore. Chudleigh’s Apple Farm (of Chudleigh’s pie fame) offers a slew of other activities for families all summer long. I used to be opposed to the idea of putting a price tag on the rural experience and selling it to city parents, but really, where else are you going to get all this?

- A petting zoo with alpacas, deer, goats, peacocks and more
- Tractor-drawn wagon rides
- A large safe & fun playground complex with a sandpit, towers, bridges and slides
- Straw maze
- Face painting and pony rides on weekends
- A restaurant great for farm-fresh summer lunches
- Store where you can take home an apple pie and many other treats
- Picnic area
- Nature walks featuring a teepee

And at $17.50 for a family of four or $5 per person (kids three and under are free) you still come out ahead of lunch at McDonald’s.

Classic Ice Cream

Tom's Dairy Freeze sign

All summer long (and winter, too). 630 The Queensway. 416-259-1846.

There are few simpler or more perfect pleasures than driving out to The Queensway on a summer’s evening and pulling into Tom’s Dairy Freeze. The vintage 1960′s  ice cream and burger shack stands alone in a small lot littered with picnic tables. The weather-worn sign out front is lit up on all sides by incandescent bulbs and you feel as though you’ve been thrown back into another time. If you’re lucky, the line winding it’s way from the front window won’t be too long. And as we dug into our banana split (with four spoons) I thought this is the stuff childhood dreams are made of.

Toronto Fringe: Kids Venue and More

By rebecca, July 1, 2010 11:53 am

June 30 – July 11, 2010.  Kids plays at the Palmerston Library Theatre, 500 Palmerston Ave (just north of Bloor)

For two weeks every summer, you get the chance to take your kids to see real, live theatre on the cheap.  Or leave the kids at home and check out some of the other plays at Fringe. All adult tickets are $10 and kids get in for $5. Check out The Fringe website for play listings or to download a program.

Also, yours truly will be reviewing each and every kids play over at Eye Weekly to help you decide which production is right for you. I’ll link up the reviews at the end of this post as they go up, if you’re having trouble picking out the kids plays on the Eye Weekly site. Continue reading 'Toronto Fringe: Kids Venue and More'»

Mr. Playground Confidential Parties For Cancer

By rebecca, June 16, 2010 2:47 pm

Were serious about band practise around here.

We're serious about band practice around here.

Friday, June 25 at the garrison. 1197 Dundas St. W. (just west of Ossington).  Doors open at 9pm.

My husband is throwing a party (more details here) and you should come. Here’s why:

1. A night out without kids. We all love the family friendly events and proving to the world that we can still party ’till the break of, er, 8pm with the best of them. Every once in a while, though, it is good to go out on the town and not have to worry about where to park the stroller. Trust me, it’s good for your soul and it will make you a better parent as soon as the hangover wears off. Continue reading 'Mr. Playground Confidential Parties For Cancer'»

March Break Fun At the CN Tower

By rebecca, March 13, 2010 10:29 am

During March Break, March 15 – 19 at the CN Tower

March Break is the perfect time to be a sightseer in your own city. (Crowds and all … but what can you do?) The CN Tower has some special activities on during the week and is offering their everything-included Total Tower ticket for $25 (down from the regular $33).

The kids and I will be attending the Meet and Greet With Dora on Tuesday morning courtesy of Mega Blocks and Mom Central Canada, which should appease both Colum’s desire to visit the CN Tower and Irene’s budding Dora-mania. Continue reading 'March Break Fun At the CN Tower'»

Focus Groups For Creating Condominiums That Work For Housing For Families

By rebecca, February 25, 2010 3:37 pm

Wednesday, March 3 from 12:00pm – 2:00pm at Spadina & Bremner, Toronto.

Why do all the families move to the suburbs? At least part of the problem is a serious lack of family-friendly housing in our downtown. Developers would rather build more teensy condo units that they can sell to singles or couples than fewer three or four bedroom units that can accomodate a family. Every Wednesday from 10:30 – 11:30am at Little Bird Fly. 2955 Dundas St. West. The Junction, Toronto. FREE

Finally a drop-in program geared toward the pre-school set. Junction Dave’s off-beat, regular guy charm is such a refreshing change from the well-meaning schoolmarm vibe you get in so many of these kiddie circles. Featuring classic kids songs accompanied by an accoustic guitar, a touch of music history, dancing, song-writing, multi-media animal lessons, magic and more, your 3 or 4 year old will have a blast. Bring your babies and toddlers too, though, because there’s something for everyone and I dare you to resist picking up one of the pre-loved steals Little Bird Fly offers on the way out. Family Shopping For Another Needy Family

By rebecca, December 15, 2009 3:05 am

This week or next at a home near you.

Each year my husband’s extended family gets together the week before Christmas to shop as a family for another family. About 20 years ago (give or take a couple), they realized that they could take the money they spent on gifts for each other and help make Christmas that much more special for a needy family in their area. Santa in the Junction

By rebecca, December 9, 2009 12:58 am

Saturday, December 12 at Pacific and Dundas. 11am to 1pm

This is yet another reason that you will never have to set foot in a mall ever again if you live in or around the Junction. Kids will be lining up to tell Santa what they want for Christmas at the Junction City Square and partaking of free cups of hot cocoa, carols, story-telling, crafts and general neighbourly cheer. Public Meeting About High Park Daycare Moratorium

By rebecca, December 4, 2009 12:35 am

Monday, December 7 at Annette Recreation Centre. 7pm.

Last summer there was a year-long moratorium placed on new day nurseries opening on 3/4 blocks of High Park Avenue for the purpose of evaluating the impact these small daycares would have on this residential street. Neighbourhood parents staged protests and I may have posted about it once or twice. (This interim by-law very nearly prevented The Teddy Bear Academy from opening it’s doors after one of those massive old homes had already been renovated to fit a daycare and dozens of children were already registered.)
